Unlike phones in the past which came with only pins, smartphones have a variety of options to secure access to the device. All these options no doubt have their benefits but things get worse when a user forgets the security password, pattern or pin.

Luckily there are different methods that can be followed to get access to your phone in case you forget the lock screen security on your Android device. Although the process varies according to the device and the firmware of the device but you can still unlock your device with a little effort.  You can find a few methods to bypass lock screen security.

Use Android Device Manager

One of the best methods for unlocking the screen is a service called Android Device Manager. To use this method you need to login to the Google account linked with your device from any computer, tablet or laptop to access this service.  Android Device Manager can be accessed from this link.

Once you login to this service you will see interface showing your device name and last location and  three options saying Ring, Lock and Erase. You will have to click on Lock option which will show option to enter a new password. This password will replace your selected pattern, pin or password and you can use it to access your device. If you have trouble accessing the Android Device Manager try refreshing the page. It is advised to wait for 5 minutes and allow the service to set the new password. This method is one of the best way to bypass forgotten lock screen security. This options is available for almost all android devices.

Use the ‘Forgot Pattern’ Feature

The second method is the “Forgot Pattern” feature which is available on devices running Android 4.4 or lower version. This option becomes visible only after 5 failed attempts to unlock your device. Once a user made 5 unsuccessful attempts a screen pops-up with a message asking to try again 30 seconds.

If you watch the bottom right of the screen it says “Forgot Pattern”. Just click this option and you will be asked to “Enter Google Account Details”. The user will have to enter his/her Gmail account and password.

Perform a Factory Reset

If the above both methods do not work for you, then you are out of luck and left with the option to perform a factory reset. This can be painful as you will loose all the data on your device. If your device was manufactured after 2016 then you still will have to enter your Google account password to avail this option.

This option appears with a combination of keys depending on your device. Commonly the factory reset option appears if you turn off your phone and then press volume down and power button simultaneously which then shows the bootloader menu. From there you will have to navigate to recovery mode and select “Wipe data/factory reset” option.
